Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)

Building products include Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Commercial Kitchen Ventilation (CKV), and Hearth appliances.
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is the technology used in both domestic, commercial and industrial environments to provide an environmental comfort, i.e. thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality within reasonable installation, operation, and maintenance costs.
Commercial Kitchen Ventilation (CKV) includes exhaust hoods, recirculating units, exhaust fans air scrubbers/ecology units and its components and accessories such as grease filters, grease ducts and fire extinguishing systems.
Hearth Products includes solid fuel burning stoves and fireplaces, fireplace inserts, pellet-fired stoves, gas grills and barbecue appliances.
In order to build a “compliant” appliance it is essential to understand regulatory requirements stated in standards covering specific building product. For example: use of proper material and thickness for the enclosure of the hearth product or the exhaust hood, choosing right gasket and wiring material used in the heated oil environment, selecting components based on the conditions of acceptability, placing electrical components into the electrical enclosure with the proper environmental rating.

Some of the standards addressing safety/emission requirements for building appliances are as following:

  • UL/CSA 1995 (Heating and Cooling Equipment)
  • UL 705/CSA-C22.2 No. 113 (Standard for Power Ventilators)
  • UL 710/ULC S646 – series (Standard for Exhaust Hoods for Commercial Cooking Equipment)
  • UL 1482 (Standard for Solid-Fuel Type Room Heaters)
  • EPA 202 (Emissions from stationary sources)
  • EPA 5G (Emissions from wood heaters)
